The Lovely Bones

A young girl who has been murdered watches over her family--and her killer--from heaven. She must weigh her desire for vengeance against her desire for her family to heal.

Alice Sebold’s novel, The Lovely Bones, begins, “My name was Salmon, like the fish; first name, Susie. I was fourteen when I was murdered on December 6, 1973. My murderer was a man from our neighborhood. My mother liked his border flowers, and my father talked to him once about fertilizer' ” The Lovely Bones is narrated by a suburban teen who has been brutally raped and murdered by a neighbor. After the police confirm Susie’s murder, her family struggles to cope with their loss and with the unanswered questions surrounding Susie’s death.

As Susie Salmon narrates from heaven, everything she wants appears as soon as she thinks of it - except the thing she wants most: to be back with the people she loved on earth. From heaven, Susie watches. She sees her happy suburban family implode after her death, as each member tries to come to terms with the terrible loss. Over the years, her friends and siblings grow up, fall in love, do all the things she never had the chance to do herself. But life is not quite finished with Susie yet.

The Lovely Bones is a luminous and astonishing novel about life and death, forgiveness and vengeance, memory and forgetting. It is, above all, a novel which finds light in the darkest of places, and shows how even when that light seems to be utterly extinguished, it is still there, waiting to be rekindled.

Just like everyone says, I advise everyone to read the book before watching this movie. The movie is filled and intertwined with symbolism that I give complete respect for. It has an eerie feeling that I always look for and enjoy. Although it surprised people, I loved the creativity and symbolism in the scenes of Susie's 'in-between'. This movie is the definition of 'artsy' and in my opinion, a purchase well made.

OK GO!

This band has more than enough charisma, a great sound, and fantastic music videos. OK GO! are on the top of my, 'I don't know how to say this, but I want to be your best friend,' list, and I know they'll be on yours once you watch their videos.

Dear Jack

Dear Jack opens on the day Andrew McMahon is diagnosed with Leukemia and continues on through the life-changing and intensely personal events that follow. The film also includes flashes back to Andrew’s childhood, the making of the Jack’s Mannequin album and his collaboration with Tommy Lee, as well as rare live footage and the chronicling of his relationships with two very important people in his life, his sister and her best friend. Dear Jack is a raw look at the battle that is Leukemia and the hope that can be found in hard places.

Unfortunately they are already sold out of DVDs and you can now only buy it on iTunes in the States. So I am still waiting for it to come to Canada.

Keds

The first thing on my shopping list right now is navy blue Keds.

Vintage Camera Display

A fun idea by Tim Melideo, where he displays his vintage cameras on his wall. This will definitely be considered when I decorate my future house.

Bubble Wrap Calendar

I found this neat idea from the Nylon Magazine, and you can either order it for $29.99 or you could easily make it yourself. I dont know if I would be able to control my obsession by only popping one a day, but it would take some strong discipline. It would be smart to have some extra bubble wrap laying around for your spontaneous splurges.

PostSecret

PostSecret is an ongoing community art project where people mail in their secrets anonymously on one side of a postcard. It was created by Frank Warren when he had the idea and distributed postcards throughout his town, not knowing that it would work. Now a couple years later with his own website, books, and museum exhibits where Frank chooses select secrets to post. Every Sunday new PostSecrets are posted for everyone to see and enjoy at postsecret.com

Most people have already been introduced to Frank Warren's project without even knowing it. PostSecret is used in the music video, "Dirty Little Secret," by the All-American Rejects.

NYLON

My latest discovery and joy is the indie style magazine NYLON. Unlike a Seventeen magazine, you wont find one ad about mascara in it (except for the Covergirl Nylon). It focuses on fashion, beauty, music, film, art, books, and culture with a heavy influence of the indie culture. The magazine has a artsy feel to it and is very European. Even their photo shoots are different and unique from any other magazine you'll ever see. My favourite section of this magazine is radar. It shows you up-and-coming books, music, art, and film that have not made it mainstream, or even close. You are constantly making new discoveries with NYLON.

Andrew McMahon is a friend of mine.

Andrew McMahon is the definition of passion. As the lead singer, pianist, and song writer to the current band, Jack's Mannequin, and the former boy band, Something Corporate, I have been passionate about his music and amazed by his talent for the past two years. With the influence of surviving leukemia five years ago, his lyrics are raw and real, and more than quotable. You can hear his soul within the chords and see it when he plays on top of his piano. For anyone who wants a change from the radio music, Jack's Mannequin is the way to go.
