Into The Wild
This movie can get you so caught up in the wonderment of living your life on the road. Making it seem so easy, I actually said out loud that I was done with society and wanted to live in the woods after watching this movie. Into The Wild gives you a warm feeling inside. I advise anyone who wants to watch something different to rent "Into The Wild."
P.S. I Made This
is a movement.
It’s a call to action to re-imagine, re-use and re-invent.
I see it. I like it. I make it.
P.S. I Made This is a fun website that has great DIY ideas. Constantly updating, this website is the place to go on a rainy day.
Almost Famous
The Cranberries - Zombie
This song has made me fall in love with the Cranberries and even more so when I watched the music video. The video is so artsy and has that great 90s feel to it as it fit perfectly with the lyrics as they talk about the effects of war.
Salvation Mountain
After seeing a documentary of Salvation Mountain and once again in "Into The Wild", this has now been added to my list of places to go before I die.
When Leonard's truck broke down in the desert nearly thirty years ago he experienced an epiphany so intense that he decided to set up camp and build a monument to God in that exact spot. "God is Love," he says. "It's simple. You just hafta love god, and he'll love you back."
“This old chap painted a mountain!
The mountain is in Cali.
He calls it Salvation Mountain.
He sleeps in a cave inside the mountain.
His name is Leonard.
He gave me a tour.
His fly was down.”
–Adam
Dirty Projectors - Stillness is the Move
With a catchy sound and an interesting music video, an open mind can let you see the potential for this song.

500 Days of Summer
This is a story of boy meets girl. The boy, Tom Hansen of Margate, New Jersey, grew up believing that he'd never truly be happy until the day he met the one. This belief stemmed from early exposure to sad British pop music and a total mis-reading of the movie 'The Graduate'. The girl, Summer Finn of Shinnecock, Michigan, did not share this belief. Since the disintegration of her parent's marriage she'd only love two things. The first was her long dark hair. The second was how easily she could cut it off and not feel a thing. Tom meets Summer on January 8th. He knows almost immediately she is who he has been searching for. This is a story of boy meets girl, but you should know upfront, this is not a love story.
This movie may be my all time favourite. I love the feel, style, music, and most of all the actors. Zooey Deschanel is my favourite female actress and her and Joseph Gordon-Levitt complement each other very well. The soundtrack defines the kind of music that I love. Everyone should watch this movie.

Marc Johns
About Marc
Marc Johns creates whimsical drawings filled with dry wit and humour. Whether it’s a man with branches growing out of his head that need pruning, or a pipe that’s trying to quit smoking, his characters are simply, sparsely drawn, yet speak volumes with just a few strokes of the pen. He's been drawing since he was tiny. He's not tiny anymore, but he's not exactly big either. Marc is not sure why he's talking about himself in the third person...
I generally aim to say as much as possible with as few elements as possible. My work often leans toward humour. Finding the humour in things often leads to finding the truth. I like to create absurd situations, by combining things together that don’t belong, or imagine what inanimate objects would say if they could speak. For instance, the pen I am using to write this draft would probably say: "I'm tired. Can we stop for a bit?" Or perhaps it would say: "I can't believe you're making me write this. This is rubbish. Signing cheques would be more inspiring than this." These are the things I think about. I think about a lot of things. I think about thinking. Don't try it though, it's not worth it.
I use watercolours in ways you shouldn't. I make my own sketchbooks. If I smoked, I'd roll my own. I'd rather draw than rent a movie. Don't try to start a conversation with me about recent films. I haven't seen any. I play the guitar. If I was a hobo, I'd learn to play the ukulele, because you could fit one in your duffle bag. My artwork and the materials I use are quite compact. You could fit my studio in a large suitcase.

Numerous Drawings
Sam Shipley and Jeff Halmos started a blog where everyday they post a drawing from their sketchbook. Their description: Daily drawings using the same paper, same pencil, no erasers, no photoshop, and some colored marker here and there... Their blog has given me inspiration to pick up my pencil and just draw. Check out their blog now and maybe you'll feel the same.

The Lovely Bones
A young girl who has been murdered watches over her family--and her killer--from heaven. She must weigh her desire for vengeance against her desire for her family to heal.
Alice Sebold’s novel, The Lovely Bones, begins, “My name was Salmon, like the fish; first name, Susie. I was fourteen when I was murdered on December 6, 1973. My murderer was a man from our neighborhood. My mother liked his border flowers, and my father talked to him once about fertilizer' ” The Lovely Bones is narrated by a suburban teen who has been brutally raped and murdered by a neighbor. After the police confirm Susie’s murder, her family struggles to cope with their loss and with the unanswered questions surrounding Susie’s death.
As Susie Salmon narrates from heaven, everything she wants appears as soon as she thinks of it - except the thing she wants most: to be back with the people she loved on earth. From heaven, Susie watches. She sees her happy suburban family implode after her death, as each member tries to come to terms with the terrible loss. Over the years, her friends and siblings grow up, fall in love, do all the things she never had the chance to do herself. But life is not quite finished with Susie yet.
The Lovely Bones is a luminous and astonishing novel about life and death, forgiveness and vengeance, memory and forgetting. It is, above all, a novel which finds light in the darkest of places, and shows how even when that light seems to be utterly extinguished, it is still there, waiting to be rekindled.
Just like everyone says, I advise everyone to read the book before watching this movie. The movie is filled and intertwined with symbolism that I give complete respect for. It has an eerie feeling that I always look for and enjoy. Although it surprised people, I loved the creativity and symbolism in the scenes of Susie's 'in-between'. This movie is the definition of 'artsy' and in my opinion, a purchase well made.

Dear Jack
Dear Jack opens on the day Andrew McMahon is diagnosed with Leukemia and continues on through the life-changing and intensely personal events that follow. The film also includes flashes back to Andrew’s childhood, the making of the Jack’s Mannequin album and his collaboration with Tommy Lee, as well as rare live footage and the chronicling of his relationships with two very important people in his life, his sister and her best friend. Dear Jack is a raw look at the battle that is Leukemia and the hope that can be found in hard places.
Unfortunately they are already sold out of DVDs and you can now only buy it on iTunes in the States. So I am still waiting for it to come to Canada.
